themainframe.ca: Using an iPhone on a Pay as You Go plan in Canada

  • Johan · 2 months ago
Great post. I'll be arriving to Calgary soon, and will definetly go with this solution. I've got an iPhone 3G bought in Sweden. Not jailbreaked/unlocked yet, but I plan to do this with Pwnagetool. But ultrasn0w hasn't been updated to work with fw 3.1 yet, has it?
  • MiG · 2 months ago
If you check the iPhone Dev Team site ( http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ ) I think you can keep an unlocked 3G phone as long as you don't upgrade the firmware when you go from 3.0 to 3.1.

I have an iPhone 2G from the USA, and it's still unlocked on 3.1. My iPhone 3G is also unlocked, but when I upgraded to 3.1, I created a custom ipsw file that didn't include the baseband upgrade. More info from the iPhone dev team:

future, please don’t bug us about it - we’ll release when we have something ready.

"If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. - Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts."

Where did you buy your 3G? Aren't phones in Sweden unlocked anyway?
  • Johan · 2 months ago
Alright. After I posted the comment above I researched a bit, and I also understood it as ultrasn0w will work with a custom 3.1 .ipsw-file (described in all these jailbreak tutorials). Thanks for the confirmation!

My iPhone 3G is bought in January 2009, and I've got an 18 month contract. So in the summer of 2010 my phone will be legally unlocked. I think it's not possible to buy an unlocked iPhone in Sweden, even now. Pay-as-you-go-plans are available, as with regular contract plans, but either way you're stuck with the carrier for at least 12 months.
  • JJ1310 · 3 months ago
thanks for the post. useful starting point for inside info.

i have a new iPhone 3GS, unlocked by the carrier in Australia. i gather the process when I arrive in Vancouver to get set up with a pay-as-you-go plan will be as you describe above - by a cheap 7-11 phone deal with airtime from SpeakOut and use the SIM in that phone for my iPhone, and buy a pay-as-you go plan from SpeakOut.

is this the same process if I want to use Rogers pay-as-you-go plans with my iPhone 3GS (unlocked and purchased outside Canada)?

    JJ
  • MiG · 3 months ago
Yes, it would be the same process. Speakout tends to have better options than Rogers (ie: your airtime doesn't expire as quickly if you don't use it). Speakout has a deal now that gives you a phone for half price if you buy $100 worth of airtime. So that would mean about $25-30 for a phone.

Rogers might also allow data on its pay-as-you-go plans, so you should be careful -- the iPhone uses a lot of data in the background even when you're not aware of it. It checks e-mail, checks for updates to your apps, etc.

That's why Speakout is a good deal for people who don't need mobile data (other than wifi). There's no chance of accidentally using it.
  • JJ09 · 3 months ago
Hi, I emailed Rogers about my iphone and options with them - this is their reply.

Do you agree or have any opposing views on the statements after "... Iphones can be used on the Pay As You Go service however"?..... [excuse the u/c below]

"In your recent email, you have informed us that you're moving to Vancouver from Australia and would like confirmation that you will be able to use your unlocked iPhone 3GS on the Rogers Pay As You Go service with the purchase of a new SIM card.

    • You do have the option of using Rogers Pay As You Go service with an unlocked phone.

    • You would need to purchase a Rogers SIM card to activate an unlocked phone. The cost of a SIM card is $40.00+tax available at any Rogers outlet.

    • Iphones can be used on the Pay As You Go service however;

    • Pay As You Go service supports internet access through the WAP browser only. The iPhone is a full HTML device and it does NOT support WAP.

    • Also, Pay As You Go does NOT support the extensive iPhone data features such as visual voicemail, email, Maps with GPS, YouTube, etc.

    • Please note also that non-Rogers phones are manufactured with unknown specifications and are not tested internally, we are unable to guarantee their functionality on our network.

    • It is possible that you could experience ISSUES with dropped calls.

    • As well, the internet browser and text messaging will NOT work, as their configuration is not the same as ours. ...."

If what Roger's customer service team says is correct, it would seem that pay-as-you-go is not a good option for my non-Rogers iphone 3GS. It's a major if I can't use text messaging and I would like the option to use the internet browser and some of the iphone data features.

Appreciate your comments. If anyone else viewing this message has gone through this process recently - I'd be happy to read your experiences and/or recommendations.

    J
  • MiG · 3 months ago
Well, if Rogers Pay-as-you-go doesn't have data, then there's really no reason to go with Rogers.

Just drop by a 7-11 and pick up the cheapest Speakout phone instead. They usually have a promo going where you can get a discount on the phone (for example, you could get the Nokia 1208 or similar for $30 in August with a $100 airtime purchase). Then just swap the SIM card into your iPhone.

    I wouldn't pay $40 just for a Rogers SIM. That's insane.

Texting works just fine with 7-11 Speakout on the iPhone. I use it every day.

And you can always just use wifi for your data access. Read and write your e-mails and then next time you're near a wifi zone, it will send and receive them, etc.

I have discovered "PureMobile" are selling-the Apple iPhone 3GS 32GB Black Unlocked GSM Cellular Phone for C$899 outright . Are "PureMobile" a 'trusted' online mobile supplier in Canada? J
  • MiG · 3 months ago
Hi there. If you already have an unlocked iPhone from Australia, don't worry, it will work just fine with a Speakout SIM in it. Or even a Rogers SIM if you'd like. I have one from the US that I've unlocked myself and it works just fine.

As for buying a new 3GS, you can get one from Rogers for C$699/$799 16/32GB.

    http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-prod...
  • JJ09 · 3 months ago
    Q. what stores/suppliers in Vancouver will sell the iPhone 3GS "outright" and what would the approx. pricing be to buy the 32GB version (rather than locking into a 3yr contract)?
  • stu · 10 months ago
OMFG!!!!!!!!!!! It works!!!!! rogers suspended my phone a while back and I went to 7-11 to get the pay as you go phone ( $89 ) and swaped the sim card and VOILA. It asked for english and I hung up then called some one and it went through.

    Thank you for the post
  • tinytanks · 10 months ago
I called Speakout's tech support about this and they said the wifi would not work. That doesn't make sense to me since the wifi is hardware and not dependent on a 3G or Edge network. He was adamant that wifi require some sort activation and they don't do that, so it won't work. Can anyone confirm that wifi continues to work on an iphone (2G or 3G) and that there is no possibility of data charges?
  • MiG · 10 months ago
Don't call Speakout, they have no idea about this stuff.

WiFi definitely works on both my original iPhone, and my iPhone 3G with Speakout SIMs.

The Speakout tech support guy is just confusing WiFi with 3G or Edge connectivity. He doesn't know what he's talking about.
  • tinytanks · 10 months ago
I picked up a speakout phone and tried putting the sim card into a friend's locked Rogers 3G iphone. It didn't recognize the speakout network. When he went to the settings menu, he saw a Speakout option, but when he selected it, it wouldn't connect to the network and calls could not be placed. I followed the steps described on this page, but to no avail. Any ideas?
  • MiG · 10 months ago
I can confirm it works just fine in the couple of iPhone 3G phones from Rogers.

    Is your phone from Fido?

Another option is to jailbreak and unlock it, since there's a 3G unlock now.
  • tinytanks · 10 months ago
    Thanks for the reply.

It was definitely a Rogers phone. I'm wondering if he installed the latest iphone update if that might affect the Speakout sim card from working. Are you using the latest firmware, or an older one?
  • MiG · 10 months ago
Yes, both of mine are using 2.2.1, and there's no problem. The Speakout SIM is actually a Rogers sim, so the phone doesn't know the difference.

Is there an error message you're getting?
  • tinytanks · 10 months ago
Thanks MiG, your input is appreciated!

I don't remember an error message. My friend put the Speakout sim in his locked 3G iphone and nothing appeared in the top left corner of the screen where it would say Rogers or Speakout. He went to network settings and saw a Speakout option, so the phone must have recognized that there was a Speakout sim in it, but even when we selected it, it would not connect to the network and no calls could be placed.

I guess I'll try to find someone else with an iphone and see if I can try it in theirs.

    Thanks!
  • MiG · 10 months ago
This might be obvious, but did he turn it off and on (ie: shut down the iPhone?)
  • tinytanks · 10 months ago
Ya, he powered it off completely and waited a bit before turning it back on. No dice, I'm afraid.
  • MiG · 10 months ago
That's strange for sure. I wonder what's going on. Do you have another SIM you could try?
  • tinytanks · 10 months ago
No, I just bought that Speakout phone to get the sim with the hope it would work in an iphone. I'm going to try to find someone else with an iphone where I can try it. Failing that, I'll either get an unlocked phone or just keep this one and get an ipod touch!
  • tinytanks · 10 months ago
I tried it again on my friend's phone. This time, we turned off the 3G option and it worked. I'm guessing that since the Speajkout sim doesn't use the 3G capabilities, having it turned on was making the sim card incompatible. I'm glad it started working so I can look into getting an iphone of my own. Thanks again for your help!
  • tinytanks · 9 months ago
    Hello again,

I picked up an iphone through my wife's Rogers account. She was entitled to a hardware upgrade. We activated it through her sim card and called tech support to have all the data blocked. I turned off the 3G setting and put in the Speakout sim card and it works. However, we're noticing that when we are away from wifi, an E shows up in the top left corner beside where it says Speakout. Because we don't have a data plan on the Rogers account (we put the Rogers sim card back in the old phone) the iphone might still connect to the Edge network even with the Speakout sim inside, and cause some big charges to the Rogers account.

Have you had any issues with this E and charges, or is your phone off contract making this a non-issue?

    Thanks!
  • MiG · 9 months ago
There's no way for the iPhone to use the Edge network with a SpeakOut SIM. No problem.Even if the E is present.
  • 108billy · 1 year ago
Nice :) Ill be book marking this in about 2 secs!

Thinking about doing this my self for me and my son.
  • rahul · 11 months ago
    what about data charges?
  • carlos · 11 months ago
thanks for posting. the 7-11 phone you mention is indeed the best option. I called Telus and Rogers. Telus was selling a great phone, with $50 initial airtime bonus, however, the balance expires each month (or two months depending on the card you buy). That's bad. 7-11 balance is good for a full year.
  • MiG · 11 months ago
Telus phones won't work for the iPhone, since Telus uses CDMA, not GSM. So Telus phones don't have SIM cards to remove.
  • curt · 11 months ago
    thanks good answer
  • stu · 10 months ago
can you sill use the new sim card even if rogers suspended your iPhone?
  • mercedesss · 10 months ago
so will a fido 3g unlocked work with speakout sim card
  • MiG · 10 months ago
Yes, any *unlocked* phone will work with a speakout SIM.
  • Lisa · 9 months ago
What about an unlocked phone from the US?? Would you take a chance buying an unlocked phone from the US?

By the way, thank you so much for this information!! I have wanted an IPhone since they came to Canada and could never afford the rate plans.
  • MiG · 9 months ago
My original iPhone is one I bought in the USA, and then unlocked (it was originally locked to AT&T, but I unlocked it.

You should now be able to unlock any iPhone (including the 3G) using the pwnage too (google it!).
  • Andrew · 10 months ago
Do features like Caller ID, new voice mail notification, incoming, outgoing and missed call history, work fine on the iPhone when used with Speakout? This sounds like a great solution, but I would need switch my number from my Bell prepaid account and buy a used iPhone, so I'd just like to know exactly how everything works first.

    Thanks for the great article.
  • MiG · 10 months ago
Caller ID and Voicemail work just fine, as do missed call history, etc. The only thing that doesn't work is "visual voicemail."
  • Andrew · 10 months ago
That's great to hear, and I'm going to give this some serious thought. Cheers.
  • kenpachiki · 10 months ago
u sai du like using the 7-11 option .. but will this work with a rogers pay as u go sim card as well. i have a 3g jail broken iphone.
  • MiG · 9 months ago
Jail broken is not the same as unlocked. Is it locked? Is it locked to Rogers? Or is it unlocked?

Anyway, if it will work with a 7-11 SIM, it will definitely work with a Rogers SIM too.
  • a creaper · 9 months ago
ya like kenpachiki said... does it have to be a speakout card, or can it be and rogers sim card?
  • MiG · 9 months ago
It can be any SIM card, as long as your phone is unlocked.

If it's a Rogers-locked phone, then yeah, you can use a Rogers SIM.
  • Kenneth · 8 months ago
    Hi MiG,

Does the phone still use 3G connection when on WiFi? Also, does text messaging work as it normally would? (Didn't see it mentioned on this page.) And since there is no data plan, pictures cannot be sent - right?

    Thanks,
    Kenneth
  • MiG · 8 months ago
3G and Edge are cellular data connections. Neither will work with Speakout.

No big deal, though, because you can use WiFi which is faster than both 3G and Edge. And it's free. You connect to your home WiFi network, or to public ones (internet cafes, etc).

Text messaging works just the same as it does on any other phone or system.

Pictures can be e-mailed using the built-in e-mail program. It works just fine using WiFi.
  • MiG · 8 months ago
Looks like either the original iPhone or the iPhone 3G are now able to be unlocked using the pwnage tool. So it doesn't matter where you get your iPhone, you should be able to unlock it and use it with a Pay As You Go SIM.
  • Kenneth · 8 months ago
    Thanks.

I'm getting the phone within 2 weeks and will try this with SpeakOut. I'll stop by with questions/comments if I have any!
  • ryley · 8 months ago
So let me get this straight you go into a 7-11 buy the 90$ or whatever nokia pull the sim jam it into your iPhone? Then you use the 7-11 plan or the rogers pay as you go?
  • MiG · 8 months ago
You buy the cheapest phone they have. You only want the SIM, so it doesn't matter which phone it is, so might as well go for the cheapest one. A couple of times a year they have a promotion where they give you a free phone when you buy a certain amount of airtime. That's the best time to buy it.

Then you put the SIM in your iPhone, and as far as Speakout is concerned, you're still using their phone.

No Rogers involvement at all (other than 7-11 Speakout using the Rogers GSM network).
  • Bankrupt · 7 months ago
    Worked Great!!

Thank you I can now use my iPhone again.

Thank you Thank you Thank you
  • brandy · 7 months ago
how do you buy the iphone cause its pn a contract all ready you can only buy an iphone on a three year contract so you would have to pay the contracct whats the point of pay as you go??
  • MiG · 7 months ago
I bought an iPhone at an Apple store in the states. You can buy them online on e-bay and other sources too.
  • brandy · 7 months ago
wait if texting doesnt work why would you even get a sim card why dont you just get and ipod touch it has free wi-fi too??
  • MiG · 7 months ago
Texting works just fine on a pay-as-you-go plan, including the 7-11 Speakout one.

The iPhone has free wi-fi too.
  • Mister · 6 months ago
Thanks for the confirmation that this baby works! I've been researching like a madman trying to figure out whether this will work. I thought it would given that I managed to use the GCal to send email reminders to me via the Rogers towers. Good to have confirmation though.

Even though I love my Nokia 5200 tri-band phone from SpeakOut, I want the iPhone for it's interactivity w/ my dell mini 9 hackint0sh. I love apple products, but cannot stand contracts and excessive fees (hence the hackint0sh).

Anyway, I'll probably buy a Rogers iPhone off a buddy of mine, and that will last me a few years.

Calculating my usage on the SO plan: $200-250/year = $600-750/3 years
Rogers: basic plan is $25+$6.95activation+some hidden charge that you never know about/month=$360-400/year = $1080 - $1200/3 years

Bottom line: Rogers will rape you for having a neat little gadget.

Will let you know if this worked.

What is mobile data? Does that mean I need wireless internet to surf the web or text?
  • MiG · 6 months ago
Mobile data = using Rogers (or AT&T) to access the internet.

Speakout doesn't have mobile data. So to access the internet (for Safari, e-mail, etc) you'll need WiFi nearby.

Texting works just fine on Speakout, though, since you don't need internet access to text.
  • Kenneth · 6 months ago
    Hi MiG!

Got the iPhone and it works great with SpeakOut.

Just wondering if you'll be buying the new iPhone 3Gs or just updating your current phone with the new 3.0 software. The Rogers site says they're selling the iPhone device without contract, but prices aren't available yet. Any idea how much it'll be for the 8, 16, or 32 GB?

I'd like to sell my 3G now and just get the new 3Gs on the 19th - but if the price is super expensive, I'll just stick with my 3G.

    Thanks,
    Kenneth
  • MiG · 6 months ago
I'd love to get my hands on an iPhone 3GS, but I just bought the 3G less than a year ago. So I might wait until the next version before switching. Besides, I bought the 2 year Applecare for the 3G, so I should at least wait until that expires before switching.

    I think the new prices are $99 for the 3G, $199 for the 3GS 16GB, and $299 for the 3GS 32GB. I think they're on the rogers website: http://tinyurl.com/mk9m3m
  • Kenneth · 6 months ago
Thanks. Prices came out for the 3Gs device only and it's of $699/$799 for the 16/32gb.

Did you load the 3.0 on your 3G? I haven't yet, but does MMS work?
  • MiG · 6 months ago
MMS does work with 3.0. I've been using 3.0 for a day or so now, on my iPhone 3G. Will load it on my original iPhone (2G) one tonight.
  • Brody · 6 months ago
I have a question I just bought iPhone 3g a and I have a sim card that has already been used and activated so will I have to pay an activation fee the sim card is a pay and talk
  • MiG · 6 months ago
What kind of SIM is it?
  • Brody · 6 months ago
Rogers on pay and talk and the phone is unlocked I just want to know if I will have to pay for anything besides minutes
  • MiG · 6 months ago
I think you need to specifically tell Rogers to turn off data on your account, otherwise your iPhone may use data on the Rogers Pay As You Go SIM. The iPhone will always be calling home to check for software application updates, for example.
  • Barry · 6 months ago
I have a phone that someone gave me because the battery had died on it. If there is a sim card still in it could I use it in an IPhone and if so what do I need to do to re-activate it?
  • MiG · 6 months ago
What kind of phone is it?
  • Mister · 6 months ago
Hey Mig. I was breaking my head trying to figure out how to smuggle an iPhone from US. And look what happened: no contract iPhone in Canada!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya, I got the new 16GB 3GS! It's smokin'! The speakout sim works beautifully as well (took a while to activate though, which had me worried). BE AWARE when buying a no contract phone from Rogers WITHOUT a Rogers wireless account: NO REFUND/RETURN/WARRANTY. That's fine with me since this is an Apple product, which is still under Apple's 1 year warranty :)

Thanks for this website. It convinced me to get the iPhone (even though i'll live on the street for a month, lol).

    Cheers
  • MiG · 6 months ago
Awesome! That's a lot of money, though. I wonder how much a used 3G would go for? I might consider a no-contract phone if I thought I could get a reasonable amount on e-bay for my 3G. But then again, I'll probably be back in a year's time to buy the next iPhone. My 3G has a 2-year Applecare warranty, so perhaps I'll just stick with it for one more year.
  • J · 6 months ago
I noticed that Rogers have a pay as you go plan which is $29 with unlimited data, can I use it with an unlocked iphone? Any advice would help!
  • MiG · 6 months ago
I'm not sure, you'd have to ask them. Is it unlimited data or unlimited surfing? If it's unlimited data it should work just fine. It's about the same as their $30/month data plan.
  • Serguei · 6 months ago
Hi MiG,thanks for the useful tips. I bought 3GS on the launch day from Rogers and signed for a minimum voice plan (I need iPhone mostly for development) and a 6Gb data plan. A week later I can see there are some better options. Good news is I can get full refund if I return iPhone within 30 days and with less than 30 minutes of air-time used. Do you think it's better to get no-contract iPhone from Rogers or from Apple? Does Apple provide some additional warranty or it's the same 1 year? I appreciate your help.
  • MiG · 6 months ago
I think the warranty is exactly the same.

I wonder if the iPhone from Apple would be unlocked if you get it without a contract?
  • Serguei · 5 months ago
    Hi MiG,
I've just visited one of Apple stores. They sell only locked phones, you have to choose Rogers or Fido, and they'll provide a particular SIM card. So I guess I have to choose Rogers to use SpeakOut. BTW, Rogers is decreasing their Buyers Preference/Remorse policies from 30 days to 15 days:

    Hi MiG:
This is great. One question though, must I buy an 'activated' iphone or can I purchase one already in the box?
    JD
  • MiG · 6 months ago
It can be either. If it isn't activated yet, there's a way to activate it using the pwnage tool.
  • J · 6 months ago
Hello, what is the difference between unlimited data and unlimited surfing? Thank you!
  • Mister · 6 months ago
Just wanted to give people a follow up on my money saving scheme involving an iPhone 3GS (I know, sounds like an oxymoron...). I did dish out $800 on the 16GB 3GS (that's after taxes and no way of returning it back to Rogers because I didn't activate the phone thru them) + the OtterBox case for $80 (Im rough on phones). I canceled my land line, $30/month, which would have been ~ $1000/3years. Like most people, I have internet at home and have set up a secure wireless network so I can browse teh internets on my netbook and the iPhone anywhere at home. I signed up for Skype's unlimited calling in US/Canada for $2.95/month or you can sign up for a year for $30! (much better than $30/month with Robbers) and enjoy Skype calls from home.

    Some simple arithmetic:
    1) savings by kicking Robbers to the curb: $1000
    2) bought iPhone for $800 and Otter case for ~$100 = $900
    3) spent money on Skype service for 3 years (at least until GoogleVoice comes along): ~$100
Difference = $0 (all rough estimates, but basically, it pays off to kick one of the big boys out of your life).

With Skype, if you sign up for a plan like mine (you can cancel anytime), you can forward your calls from Skype to any landline/mobile for free. This means that I stay logged in at home all the time, so when someone Skypes me and I dont answer, the call is forwarded to my iPhone while Im on the road (SpeakOut charges of 25 cents/min kick in)!! Confused me the first time some1 Skyped me while I was driving (shows up on mobile as "unknown").

Also, Skype gives you free voice mail, but SpeakOut already gives this option free of charge.

Anyway, by canceling my landline with Rogers and NOT signing up for one of their outrageous iPhone plans (thus saving upwards of $2000/3yrs) AND by using Skype I have almost everything I need, and still saving money.

Now if only GoogleVoice came though with that invite, I won't even need Skype to call free anywhere in the world. Its coming real soon :)

    Hope this helps some.
Let's hear how you are saving and still enjoying your new toy.

PS I did neglect to mention that I spend roughly $200/year on SpeakOut, but this is not a back breaker since Robbers would have been much more expensive.

  • JD · 5 months ago
    Hi Mister:
Have you been able to receive text messages on the SpeakOut SIM which are sent from Skype? I tried out your Skype suggestion and got the 2.95/month deal but for some reason when I try to send a text to my SpeakOut iPhone from Skype it never goes thru.

Sounds insignificant but this means I cannot setup my Skype CallerID to match my SpeakOut phone number, since Skype sends a Verification text-message to my SpeakOut phone which I do not receive. It would be great to match my Skype CallerID with my SpeakOut # so that everyone whom I call with Skype will actually pickup instead of ignoring the 012-345-6789 phone number.

Did you have this problem, and did you find a solution?

  • Mister · 5 months ago
Hey JD. In fact sms from Skype works just fine. When i use Skype to call mobiles and landlines, I have it set up so my Speakout number shows up. There is a step you go through once you are set up for the unlimited calling (that's the monthly subscription, not the pay as you go option, which in my opinion is a waste). I simply typed in my cell number, then had Skype send me a SMS with a confirmation code, which I then punched in in Skype, I think.

From memory, I dont think I received a 2nd message from Skype. I only received 1 sms from Skype from +99999 number giving me a confirmation code. I thought there was supposed to be a 2nd one confirming the call forwarding, but no, that was the only sms I got from them. Try it again, maybe the server had a brain fart...

    Hope this helps
    Mister
  • Mister · 5 months ago
Hey JD. Just following up. Did you get sms to work properly?

The one downside of Skype is that sms is not as cheap as SpeakOut's: it's $0.126, basically 13cents per text (SpeakOut is 5 cents).

The only time I used Skype SMS was during the call-forwarding activation. I wouldn't use it to Skype otherwise.

Wait for GoogleVoice to get to Canada, and then you'll enjoy some free SMS. To preview the service, set up your google calendar to send you an SMS reminder. It is free for me. :)

    Hi Mister,

Wondering if you have details for someone who's never owned a cellphone before about this...the phone you got from Rogers, how exactly did you activate it? I'm interested in getting my hands on a legally unlocked iPhone and using Speak Out with it...and using wireless for all the other functions. I'm wondering if paying the full price for an iPhone that's not activated with Rogers/Fido means that it's "unlocked" or what exactly. If I'm going to fork over $800 or thereabouts for an iPhone that doesn't require me to activate it with a certain carrier, I want to be sure that I can still get OS updates and the like without the thing bricking.

Also, as Speak Out doesn't work outside of Canada, I should be able to switch out the SIM card if I travel to a pay as you go, if I wanted/needed to, right? I'm seriously thinking of purchasing a cheap Nokia through 7/11, and once I find the iPhone I'm looking for, pulling the ol' switcheroo. I'm assuming this would be the same thing essentially as what you did, right?

Looking for some verification/confirmation on this, as like I said I've never owned a cellphone before, and there's a lot of conflicting information/unverified information out there to sort through...but I'm already quite fond of Apple's products and would really rather have an iPhone than the other phones I've seen. (Minus the nefariously gouging contracts and plans.)

Hi canooky. To be honest, I am not sure whether my iPhone is unlocked or just locked to Rogers given that I only had access to my SO sim. The way I activated it was by telling the Rogers rep my SO number (They wanted a Rogers number, any number, but as I no longer had my Rogers landline, I only had the SO # available). They used that pretty much.

As for unlocked phone, I highly doubt that Rogers would be selling completely unlocked phones anyway given their contract with Apple. Not sure whether you can buy a completely unlocked iPhone anywhere in North America.

My iPhone is jailbroken and if needed, I'll unlock it myself using the dev-team's tools (pwnage tool, redsnow, yellowsnow or whichever is the newest). Anyway, if you are seriously hesitant about this, buy the SO phone 1st. Once you have the courage to fork over $800, activate it using the SO number.

TIP: I noticed that after doing the activation using the SO #, my GCalendar SMSes are now free! Previously, to send an SMS reminder to ur celly, it deducted 5cents. Now it is free for some reason. Probably due to activating the SO# with Rogers' phone.

    Cheers

    Hi Mister,

I've been thinking of doing just that; at the very least, the SO phones aren't so pricey. Twenty bucks for a new phone and a bunch of airtime that won't run out for a year sounds pretty darn good to me.

I've come across listings that indicate places (outside of North America) where factory unlocked phones can be purchased; in fact, Apple has an online list of wireless providers worldwide from whom you can find such phones. Apparently the difference is that Apple produces these phones specially for those markets, so all you have to do to activate them is go on iTunes, and it recognizes the phone as being one that was never locked to a particular carrier in the first place; you can freely update it without worrying about bricking it. In some countries, the carriers will unlock phones for a fee, but these are not the same as factory unlocked. They seem to sell for roughly what you paid for your phone, in that range. (I also heard someone recently in a class I was taking mention that he'd had a friend in Greece purchase such an iPhone for him-Greece is one of the places on Apple's list—and uses it in Canada with a different SIM.)

I'm guessing such a phone would work with the SO plan beautifully, and would be "unbrickable" if I can coin a phrase. Now all I have to do is plan a trip to one of these lovely nations to buy me an emancipated iPhone...or else lobby Steve Jobs to make it easier for us free market loving masses to simply buy the phone as-is and use it however we damn well please.

Given the number of poor-looking hipsters I've seen with iPhones lately, I'm guessing a lot of people in Canada aren't using their phones strictly with Fido or Rogers. Apple might as well acknowledge that fact already.

Thanks so much for your prompt reply!

    Cheers, kooky.

im interested in buying a used ipohone 3g and im already on rogers prepaid. so if i was to get the iphone would i just need to do what is shown here and then im all set.
  • Peter · 5 months ago
Im hearing alot about that the iphone 3g will work with the speak out prepaid services. But i'm currently on rogers prepaid on a $10 a month texting plan. From what I have seen here rogers prepaid should work with the iphone 3g as well. But the one thing that im unsure about is will my rogers prepaid plan still work with the iphone 3g.
  • JD · 5 months ago
I would be weary about this. According to Rogers people I have spoken with, if you use the 3G with the iphone and your Rogers Prepaid SIM, you will use up your $$$ very fast with HTML charges. The $7 mobile dataplan does not pertain to HTML pages, according to Rogers. That being said, I haven't heard the same thing from two Rogers people yet. One says MegaPlan not applicable to iphone, other says Smartphone different than iphone, etc etc.

Has anyone tried the Roger's Pay-As-You-Go-SIMcard in the iphone? If so, did it eat up your $$$?
  • Peter · 5 months ago
So the rogers prepaid SIM does work with the iphone 3g. Becasue HTML charges wouldn't be a big problem for me because I would be using the internet rarely to not at all. If i was to use the internet it would be from a wireless router.

CAN I USE THE INTERNET IF I PAY THE $7/MONTH FOR UNLIMITED INTERNET OR DOES THAT NOT APPLY FOR I PHONES? AND DOES IT EAT UP THE MONEY YOU PUT INTO THE ACCOUNT BECAUSE ITS A i PHONE OR WILL IT BE THE SAME AS A REGU:AR PHONE?

    Turn off you caps idiot.
  • computerdoc · 5 months ago
Don't you have to contact Speakout and register?
  • JD · 5 months ago
No registration. Just buy the phone and activate it. No registration, no names, no address. Nothing.

There is a deal on now for ~$145 which gets you a NOKIA phone and $125 worth of minutes ($100 + $25 which comes with phone). You end up paying $20 for the phone.
  • computerdoc · 5 months ago
    Is this in the U.S.?
Because in Canada it requires activation only but those prices are not what
    we experience.

So this method would work on an unlocked, jailbroken iphone 3g?
  • MiG · 4 months ago
This method will work on any iPhone, if the following is true:

    1. It is unlocked (either with Ultrasnow or Pwnagetool, or bought already unlocked).

    or

    2. It is locked to Rogers. Since SpeakOut SIM cards share an ID with Rogers SIMs, so they look the same to the phone.
  • cimleahnart · 4 months ago
Can I activate the SIM card with the iphone or it has to be activated through the Nokia phone first?
    Thanks!
  • MiG · 4 months ago
The Speakout service is already activated when you buy it -- you just need to make a phone call and it will be ready to go. You'll hear a recording telling you that your new service is now active. Should work either in the nokia phone or the iphone. I activated mine in my iPhone 2G with no problems.

how about virginmobile phone? I'm on prepaid (250min / $20 month = only 8c / min) with them right now with 3 years old nokia phone. If I get a Rogers or iphone from ebay, Can I use it with virgin prepaid? I called VM and they said they use GSM as well.
  • MiG · 4 months ago
No, Virgin Mobile in Canada is on CDMA (basically using Bell's network).

Rogers is currently the only GSM operator in Canada. That's why they exclusively have the iPhone. As well, other companies also use the Rogers network, such as Fido (owned by Rogers), 7-11 Speak Out, and Petro-Canada Mobile.

    hi MiG,
Thanks for getting back so quick. Ok. Virgin is not GMS.... so I can't use it with them then.

If I go with speakout, to connect to internet, I need to near WiFi... I'm in Vancouver BC. How do I know where WiFis are?
  • dru · 4 months ago
first off i have to say awesome post. i followed this and i'm glad i did. however i was curious if you or anyone know you has issues with the iphone not detecting service every now and again. i did the speak out thing also and right now for example the iphone isn't picking up service. it happened a few nights ago too. it shows the speak out in the carrier settings but it's saying no service. also yesterday i couldn't make outbound calls but i could text in and out and get inbound calls. have you had these problems and if so know of a solution or is it just one of those quirks i'm going to hae to live with. thanks again.

    Hi,
I have a problem with my Iphone 2G(Unlocked/Jailbroken to 3.0 with redsnow 0.8). When I insert the Speakout simcard into the Iphone, it would get a bar signal for a few seconds then switches to no service and stayed that way. I tried the simcard on the speakout phone and on another unlocked phone and it would work perfectly with full signal.
Can anyone help me with this problem?
    Thanks.
  • MiG · 3 months ago
    Hi cimleahnart,

I have a 2G (unlocked with redsnow) and it works no problem with 3.0 firmware. No issues.

Have you tried doing a total reinstall (not a restore from backup) ? I know a lot of people had problems when they updated from 2.2 to 3.0 instead of doing a clean install.

Check the dev team site for more help: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

It's definitely not a problem with Speakout, like you said, since it works just fine in the speakout phone.
  • cimleahnart · 3 months ago
I reinstall 3.0 in DFU mode a few times and still no service. I've successfully downgraded back to 2.2.1 with quickpwn, still the same problem.

UPDATE: I think the problem might be the phone using the 04.05.04_G baseband. Anyone know how to downgrade this baseband with the phone running 3.0 or 2.2.1 firmware?

Can I jailbreak the iphone 3GS after it becomes prepaid. OR in order to use a iPhone 3GS as prepaid I won't be able to jailbreak it? PLS reply

    Hey MiG!

With SpeakOut, my SMS doesn't work on my iPhone. Why doesn't it work, because SpeakOut doesn't support data through text messages?

Also, if I set up my voicemail on my SpeakOut account will the Voicemail button work on my iPhone by automatically dialing my number > prompt for my pass > play my voicemail?
  • MiG · 3 months ago
SMS works just fine for me with a 3G Rogers iPhone on Speakout. Are you getting an error message?

I think you'll have to program your voicemail number -- it won't work like the iPhone visual voicemail feature. You can get your voicemail number from Speakout customer support.

    Hi MiG,

Thanks again for all your advice earlier this year. It's been working great! I do have a quick question for you though.

My wife has a Rogers cell and we got the iphone through her upgrade option. After activating the iphone with her sim card, we put that card back in her old phone and I started using the Speakout sim card in the iphone. When I would check Usage, it always showed 0 data sent and received. Recently, the power button got stuck, so Rogers sent a replacement phone. I never registered it through itunes; i just popped in the Speakout Sim card and it worked. However, when I check Usage after a week of use, it now shows 10 kb of data sent. Has that ever happened with you? I don't think it's a lot, but I'm curious if there will be a data change on my wife's cell phone bill (since they think her sim is in the iphone) or if it's impossible.

    Thanks!

    tinytanks
  • MiG · 2 months ago
I think it just may be data that the iPhone SENT? But since Speakout doesn't support Edge or 3G, it just goes nowhere. Probably just the phone checking for updates for your apps, or trying to check your e-mail.

I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you have your Speakout SIM in the phone, there's no way for Rogers to charge your Rogers account. The SIM is your identity.
  • pakman · 2 months ago
    Hey MiG,

You really helped me and a whole lot of other people alot about how to have a prepaid iphone. However, i just wanted to ask if it is possible to jailbreak/hack a locked iphone. For example, whould i be able to jailbreak/hack an iphone which is locked to Rogers.

    THANKS. PLS REPLY
  • MiG · 2 months ago
Jailbreak and unlock are two different things. Jailbreak means to install "unauthorized" software on your phone. Unlock means to allow you to use another carrier.

You won't need to either unlock or jailbreak a Rogers phone to use a Speakout SIM. Speakout SIMs identify themselves as Rogers SIMs, so they work without unlocking.

If you do need to unlock, you'll need to pwnagetool and install ultrasnow (depends on your version of iPhone and OS). Check http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ for more info.
  • pakman · 2 months ago
    Hey Mig,
    Thanks for replying.
I just wanted to ask if I can still jailbreak my iphone even if i'm using a Speakout SIM?

    Thank You
  • QWE · 2 months ago
Yes you can. jailbreaking you iphone has nothing to do with your service provider.
  • lotuselan · 2 months ago
Will it work on the Petro-Canada system just like on the 7-11? I am assuming it should as they are both Rogers based GSM systems as far as I know.
  • MiG · 2 months ago
Yes, Petro-Canada Pay-As-You-Go is just like 7-11 Speakout. Both are run by the same company (Ztar) as well.

The only advantage 7-11 has is that all denominations of top-ups last 1 year. On Petro-Canada, most are only for 6 months. Not a big deal for most people.

    It should work just fine.
  • tjtran · 2 months ago

Hey MiG , late reply but what if you have a 2G iPhone can you turn it into a 3G phone ?

If you bought an iPhone that is locked to Rogers (or not locked at all), then it should work just fine.

Yes, you can. As long as:

    1. The iPhone is unlocked (either factory unlocked or unlocked using other methods)

    or

    2. The iPhone is a Rogers iPhone, locked to Rogers (not Fido, Bell or any other carrier)
